Description

Giraffe

Giraffe, or ‘fast walker’ in the its earliest known name of Zaraffah, is a biological marvel.

Picture a giraffe standing in the midday sun. It can do so without wilting because the dark patches are criss-crossed by large blood vessels that radiate the heat back into the air.

It sleeps in short five-minute bursts througout the day and not more than half an hour in total. On the other hand, it spends up to twenty hours a day eating over 60kg of acia leaves.

Giraffes have an huge muscle that runs from the top of their heads, down the back of their necks and down their backs. The muscles act like a huge elastic band to keep the giraffe’s neck up. When they bend down, the muscle compresses and springs back when they lift their heads.

And the reason they don’t they faint when they lift their heads on their long necks is because the thick skin on their legs act like compression bandages preventing blood from collecting in their legs.
