Straw is what he has, so that is what he offers. Better than grapes, perhaps. Grapes and hospitals have become a cultural norm and a signal of despair. Oh no, they brought me grapes, thinks the patient. At least that was when one could get grapes easily.
There was a time when they were so out of fashion that one would have to forego them and bring flowers. And what happened to that thing about taking flowers out of the room at night because they sucked oxygen out of the air and delivered carbon dioxide? Better not to ask and not to know.
Supermarkets stock grapes again nowadays, so we can all return to that cultural norm as though the passing years were just a dream.
Let them make bricks without straw, as the biblical story from ancient Egypt goes. And the corollary is embodied in the phrase ‘You can’t make bricks without straw’. Which is another way of approaching the ideal of ‘Give them the tools and they’ll do the job’
